India Covid Vaccination: PM Modi also cautioned that even after vaccination, citizens must stay vigilant and maintain all precautions against the virus, including masks and distancing. Manish Kumar, a sanitation worker, becomes the first person to recieve Covid jab in Delhi.   New Delhi:       Sanitation worker Manish Kumar became the first person in India to be vaccinated against COVID-19 on Saturday, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the country's giant vaccination drive, paying tribute to frontline workers and scientists and warned citizens against falling for propaganda or rumours over vaccines. Mr Kumar received his shot at Delhi's premier All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), just one of the over 3,000 vaccination centres established around the country. On the first day of the immunisation campaign, the government said it aimed to vaccinate over 3 lakh people. By the end of the day 1.91 lakh had been inoculated, it said. Government sources sa

How the young are working round pandemic-hit job market

Labour experts say it is too soon to know exactly how this will impact the generation's lifelong career prospects, but that their path to work is unlikely to be conventional in 2021 and beyond. When we are living in the era of Big Data, you would wish to launch a career in the field of Data Science. But as the pandemic halted studies and wiped out employment opportunities for millions of young people around the world, the 23-year-old graduate found a silver lining - using the lockdown to launch her career as an independent screenwriter. Akerele had always wanted to write about the experience of being Black in Britain, and as global anti-racism protests spread last year, she found people wanted to listen. "The pandemic gave me something I didn't have before: time to write and develop my own ideas," she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. From teenagers coding in their bedrooms to graduates spurning scarce entry-level jobs to set up businesses, Akerele belon

Will work-from-home give a boost to female employment?

The Covid pandemic will change the world permanently in many ways. Most obviously, people will increasingly work from home. Workplaces will not disappear, but an increasing share of work will be done at home. This will save employers office space and ancillary facilities. It will save employees money, time, and hassle in commuting to work. It will slash the need for meetings of every sort. More people will be available for part-time work or piecework from home, boosting productivity. In India, working from home could finally reverse the dramatic crash in the female labour-force participation rate (FLPR). In rich countries, two thirds of women above the age of 15 work, increasing incomes and living standards. In every Asian miracle economy, a rising FLPR enabled GDP growth to exceed 7%. The one exception is India, where the FLPR has fallen from 33% in the early 1990s to just 25% according to government data, and to as little as 11-12% according to surveys of the Centre for

VJ Asen, 'Chennai Talks' YouTubers arrested after video of woman talking about sexuality goes viral

"After the arrest, the three told us that these are the kind of videos that gain traction online. They said they are earning around Rs 1 lakh per month," the higher official said. The police also alleged that the team used to ensure more public participation by asking their friends to pose as passersby.      A statement from the police said a patrol team picked up the YouTubers when they were intimidating members of the public using abusive words at the Elliots Beach on Monday. All three have been remanded in judicial custody by a magistrate court. Police have booked them under IPC sections 509 (word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 506 (2) criminal intimidation, 354(b) assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe, and 294 (b) punishment for using obscene words in or near any public place.      On Tuesday evening, in an interview to an entertainment website, one of the women featured in the videos said that it was she

One policy change could make your dream home in Chennai a reality

Owning a house is the dream of a lifetime for all of us. In a city, owning an independent home is impossible even for the upper-middle class. So, an apartment is the only choice available for 90% of urban citizens. The other less attractive alternative is living in the extreme outskirts of the city in an independent house and traveling for longer hours to reach office every day.           Despite the housing market crisis post-2012, apartment prices have not come down. The price of apartments has largely stagnated since 2012 and now there’s an oversupply of inventories.   As of 2017, there were 65,000 odd unsold apartment units in Chennai , the average apartments sold per year in Chennai being 12,000. While apartment prices have not increased to match inflation in the rest of the economy, neither have they come down.  In any market, an oversupply of inventory should have brought down the prices. But, it is a complicated situation in the sector, where the builders can’t afford to s
