MK Stalin to head 34-member cabinet: PTR is Finance Minister, Ma Su gets Health

The 34-member cabinet will have two women. The complete list of ministers in Chief Minister-designate MK Stalin’s cabinet was released on May 6. Stalin has chosen to keep several important portfolios including Home, Police, General Administration, IAS, IPS among others. Key members of his cabinet include DMK General Secretary Duraimurugan, who will be Minister of Water Resources, former Chennai Mayor Ma Subramaniam will be Minister for Medical and Family Welfare, while Palanivel Thiagarajan (PTR) will be Minister for Finance and Human Resource Management. Stalin’s entire cabinet will have 34 Ministers including the Chief Minister. The CM-designate has chosen a mix of veteran and young leaders in his cabinet. Notably DMK Youth Wing Secretary and son of MK Stalin, Udhayanidhi, who is a first-time MLA has not been given a portfolio. Bengal post-poll violence: Mamata holds meeting with officials, Nadda reaches Kolkata; PM Modi speaks to Governor

  As different political parties accuse each other of indulging in post-poll violence in West Bengal, Chief Minister   Mamata Banerjee   Tuesday held a meeting with the top administrative and police officers of the state and took stock of the situation, PTI reported. The CM’s meeting comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi dialed Governor Jagdeep Dhankar earlier in the day and expressed “serious anguish and concern” over the “worrisome” law and order situation in the state. Chief Secretary Alapan Bandopadhyay, Home Secretary H K Dwidevi, Director General of Police P Nirajnayan and Kolkata Police Commissioner Soumen Mitra, were present in the meeting with CM Mamata.The result of the West Bengal Assembly election was declared on May 2, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led TMC won its third successive term by winning 213 seats. DMK legislators to meet at Anna Arivalayam on Tuesday

The MLAs will formally elect M.K. Stalin as the party legislative party leader and will hand over the letter of support to the Tamil Nadu Governor Banwari Lal Purohit. The oath taking ceremony is likely to be held at Raj Bhavan on May 7, Friday without much fanfare.   Stalin's son and DMK youth wing leader Udayanidhi Stalin is in all likelihood to be in the cabinet, sources in the DMK said. EC suspends Teynampet Inspector of Police for allowing party cadres to flout Covid norms

The Election Commission passed an order of immediate suspension of the Teynampet Inspector of Police for allowing party cadres to assemble near Arivalayam today. Chennai:  Party members had violated Covid-19 protocols on main roads and beside party headquarters to celebrate in large numbers without following masking protocols and flouting social distancing norms.      Intense battles and close fights continue across Tamil Nadu as the DMK and AIADMK clash in this race to the finish in the state. From expected leads by top leaders in Kolathur and Edappadi to unexpected setbacks in Avadi and Katpadi, this Assembly election continues to be too close to call. TN assembly polls 2021: Madras HC bans use of firecrackers on May 2

T he Madras High Court on Friday imposed a ban on the bursting of firecrackers on the day of the counting of votes in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on May 2. The high court said that it is hoping all political parties, media and citizens at large will follow the COVID-19 protocol on the day of the counting of assembly election votes on May 2. A few days back, the Election Commission of India had also banned victory celebration on the day of the counting of votes on May 2. The results of the Assembly elections held in five states/UT - West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry - will be announced on May 2.   Roughly 76% of the electorate voted in the final phase of the West Bengal assembly election on Thursday, ending a month-long poll season that began with a tense political battle between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) but was quickly overshadowed by surging Covid-19 infections. Voting in three districts and a part of Kolkata saw stray violence in some areas but a sharp spike in Covid cases kept many voters indoor. The provisional turnout of 76.07 % is the lowest of eight phases and came on a day the state posted its highest cases and deaths, 17,403 and 89, respectively.           The Election Commission of India has banned all victory processions on the day of -- or even after -- counting of votes (May 2) polled to the five states in the past few weeks amid a COVID-19 surge. Legislative assembly polls were scheduled in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry in eight phases, beginning March 27 and ending April 29. "Not more than two persons shall be allowed to accompany the winning candidate or his/her authorised representative receive the certificate of election from the Returning Officer concerned," an Election Commission notification said today.
