Dell issues high-priority security patch for hundreds of machines dating back to 2009

What just happened? If you thought your aging Dell laptop was safe from modern malware or hacking exploits, think again. Dell has just released a retroactive, high-priority software patch for hundreds of its machines, some of which have initial releases dating back to 2009. The patch addresses an "insufficient access control vulnerability" present in the dbutil_2_3.sys driver, which can be found on Windows-equipped Dell systems with user-installed firmware update packages. Not all Dell machines are affected, but many are; 380, to be precise. Impacted machines range from Dell's Latitude line-up to its Inspirons and even its G-series gaming notebooks. The vulnerability would allow someone with access to the machine (which could be obtained through malware) to escalate privileges and obtain kernel-level permissions. You can find a full  list of affected machines  on Dell's website -- it's too expansive for us to list here. If one of your machines is on that lis...

Earlier this year, tech giant Amazon announced a new “Show Mode” for the PC version of the Alexa app. The feature hopes to expand the user base of Amazon’s smart home app as it brings features that are found on the Echo Show including skills that can be activated only by a voice prompt. The company has now announced that the feature will be making its debut on some Lenovo laptops. Amazon describes the Show Mode for PCs as a “voice-first, interactive Alexa experience for PCs”. The mode can be activated via a voice command asking the virtual assistant to open the feature. It can also be activated using the Show Mode icon domiciled in the Alexa app. When activated, the app displays in fullscreen mode on the PC’s screen, showing information that the user will find vital. The interface is exactly as it is on the Echo Show with features such as calendar appointments, weather information, and others. In addition, users can perform actions such as playing a song on Amazon Music, controlling...

Millions of Dell Laptops, Desktop Users Could Fall Prey to Hackers: Apply Patch Now

HIGHLIGHTS A Dell BIOS Utility cyber flaw had five vulnerabilities that existed since 2009 Sentinel Labs disclosed to flaw to Dell in December 2020, and a patch has now been released Dell has urged everyone to apply the patch, including out of service devices In yet another significant cyber vulnerability detected by a security research firm, millions of Dell laptops and desktops have been found to have sported a flaw that could have allowed cyber attackers elevated access to system internals. This could have allowed hackers to carry out a wide range of cyber attacks, including privilege escalation leading to denial of service. In simpler terms, a bug found in a preinstalled software in Dell laptops and desktops could have allowed hackers to get admin level access to users’ PCs, thereby installing malware deep inside systems that could freeze a user out of his own machine. The flaw, actually, is a collective of five different vulnerabilities that were present in the Dell BIOS Utility ...

Microsoft To Finally Add AAC Codec Support For Bluetooth Devices To Windows 10

Microsoft's planning a major release for Windows 10 at the end of the year which should include support for AAC audio through Bluetooth. For the uninitiated, AAC or Advanced Audio Codec is important for "lossless" audio streaming to Apple's headphones and will also benefit iTunes and Apple Music playback on Windows. Typically, Windows 10 supports a handful of industry-standard audio codecs like AptX but still doesn't quite cover all the popular ones. Apple, meanwhile, has supported Advanced Audio Coding for sometime now as a high-quality lossy codec for streaming audio wirelessly. Naturally, that has prompted other services and audio device makers to also support the codec. As  per a report by  The Verge , on top of AAC support, Microsoft will also better how Windows handles Bluetooth inputs.
