Total Lockdown In Tamil Nadu For 2 Weeks From Monday Amid Covid Crisis

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a two week "total lockdown" from May 10 amid a surge in COVID-19 cases. The order was issued a day after the state recorded its biggest day spike of over 26,000 new Covid infections. Chief Minister MK Stalin, in a statement, said that the lockdown was being enforced due to "unavoidable reasons". The decision, Mr Stalin added, was taken based on inputs received at a review meeting he had with district collectors on Friday, besides consultations with medical experts. "The total lockdown will be enforced from 4 am on May 10 to 4 am on May 24," he said. Other services and tasks allowed to continue during the lockdown are banks (with 50 per cent staff) and ration shops. Restaurants will only be allowed takeaways. No cabs or autorickshaws can ply on road except for hospital or wedding/funeral work, the order said. Tamil Nadu Covid news live: Total lockdown from May 10 to May 24

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a total lockdown in the state from May 10 to May 24 to curb the spread of Covid-19. Fresh Covid-19 cases reported in a day in Tamil Nadu crossed the 25,000-mark on Friday as the state reported 26,465 new cases, pushing active infections to 1.35 lakh. The 197 deaths reported on Friday took the cumulative toll to 15,171. Cases tally for the state is 13.23 lakh. The average number of deaths due to Covid-19 in Chennai has increased rapidly in the past two months. Official data from Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) shows that on an average, three people died of Covid-19 every day in the city in March — the month’s tally was 90 deaths. In comparison, the average number of daily Covid-19 deaths in the city rose to 16.7 in April, when 501 died totally. The city has, however, registered an average 46.2 deaths daily in May so far. MK Stalin to head 34-member cabinet: PTR is Finance Minister, Ma Su gets Health

The 34-member cabinet will have two women. The complete list of ministers in Chief Minister-designate MK Stalin’s cabinet was released on May 6. Stalin has chosen to keep several important portfolios including Home, Police, General Administration, IAS, IPS among others. Key members of his cabinet include DMK General Secretary Duraimurugan, who will be Minister of Water Resources, former Chennai Mayor Ma Subramaniam will be Minister for Medical and Family Welfare, while Palanivel Thiagarajan (PTR) will be Minister for Finance and Human Resource Management. “The usage of face masks by people in Chennai and Tamil Nadu is just 65 to 70 per cent. We wanted more people to wear masks. Even those who use masks are not wearing them properly — we have seen people wearing the mask on their chin or covering eyes. When we were discussing how to create awareness on this, Kishore Manohar came up with the idea of a campaign,” says Siddarth Ganeriwala of Chennai Tri-colour Initiative.   The video was created by a Chennai-based creative agency called Crazy Pencilz in just a few hours because the team wanted to influence people who would come out to celebrate after election results. DMK legislators to meet at Anna Arivalayam on Tuesday

The MLAs will formally elect M.K. Stalin as the party legislative party leader and will hand over the letter of support to the Tamil Nadu Governor Banwari Lal Purohit. The oath taking ceremony is likely to be held at Raj Bhavan on May 7, Friday without much fanfare.   Stalin's son and DMK youth wing leader Udayanidhi Stalin is in all likelihood to be in the cabinet, sources in the DMK said. Six injured in huge fire at Iran's alcohol production factory

A big fire broke out on Sunday morning in an industrial alcohol production plant near the central Iranian city of Qom, injuring six, a media report said. The fire was reported around 06:00 a.m. local time (0130 GMT) in the industrial park of Shokuhiyeh, located 20 km from Qom, according to a local fire department spokesperson.   More than 100 firefighters were immediately deployed to extinguish the fire, preventing it from reaching the tanks of alcohol and other flammable items, the Xinhua news agency reported.   Six people were injured in the fire, including two severely injured firemen and four other people who sustained superficial wounds, a spokesperson of the emergency services said.   An emergency has been declared in the area and all relevant local organizations have been mobilized to control the fire, including Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, Tasnim reported.  

EC suspends Teynampet Inspector of Police for allowing party cadres to flout Covid norms

The Election Commission passed an order of immediate suspension of the Teynampet Inspector of Police for allowing party cadres to assemble near Arivalayam today. Chennai:  Party members had violated Covid-19 protocols on main roads and beside party headquarters to celebrate in large numbers without following masking protocols and flouting social distancing norms. T he Madras High Court on Friday imposed a ban on the bursting of firecrackers on the day of the counting of votes in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on May 2. The high court said that it is hoping all political parties, media and citizens at large will follow the COVID-19 protocol on the day of the counting of assembly election votes on May 2. A few days back, the Election Commission of India had also banned victory celebration on the day of the counting of votes on May 2.   New Delhi:  The Election Commission today requested the Madras High Court to restrain the media from reporting on oral observations, days after the court's sharp remarks on "murder charges" on officials of the election body for not stopping political rallies. It also argued that there was "nothing to suggest" that campaigning was a significant factor in driving any Covid spike in states that voted versus those that didn't.
