Clubhouse, the invite-only voice-based social media app, debuts on Android

After being exclusive to iOS for more than a year, Clubhouse on Sunday debuted its Android app on the Play Store. The move will allow Android users to experience the popular audio-based social network for the first time. However, the beta app is currently live in the US but the company says the Android app will come to other English-speaking markets and then the rest of the world. The arrival of Clubhouse on Android, the world’s most popular mobile operating system, will only help increase the popularity of the app. Clubhouse began testing the Android app earlier this year. For those users outside of the US, they can pre-register their interest in the app via the Clubhouse page on the Play Store. Once the app is available in their country, the users will be notified. “Our plan over the next few weeks is to collect feedback from the community, fix any issues we see and work to add a few final features like payments and club creation before rolling it out more broadly,” the company sai

Mother’s Day 2021: Google Assistant adds new features to helps families

Ahead of Mother’s Day 2021 on May 9 this year,  Google  Assistant is bringing a couple of new features for mothers around the world. A new update to the assistance service brings new entertainment content, a family bell feature and a new enhanced broadcast messaging feature. Google announced the new features in a blog post on May 6. Here’s a detailed look at everything new that Google Assistant can now do, that can help not just moms, but the whole family. Enhanced Broadcast Feature The new enhanced broadcast feature lets Google Assistant send a broadcast message quickly to all family members across devices. These could be smartphones, Google Home, Google Nest, to name a few. What’s great is that the feature is not just limited to  Android  devices. Even  iOS  users who use Google Assistant will get the broadcast message.   Family Bell Google’s Family Bell feature was already introduced back in August 2020. However, the new update further improves the feature and now lets users

The Tech Weekender: PUBG Mobile coming to India in a new avatar, Google following Apple's lead, Discord coming to the PlayStation, and more

WhatsApp recently scrapped its May 7 deadline for users to accept its controversial privacy policy update. The Facebook-owned messaging platform announced the policy update back in January 2021, which was first supposed to come into effect on February 8. However, severe backlash from users, who were concerned about privacy, forced the company to postpone its plans. The last date for accepting the policy update was pushed to May 15 after which WhatsApp said it would delete accounts of those who didn’t accept the new terms.\  As the wait for PUBG Mobile's return in India continues, developer’s Krafton, recently announced that the game will be rebranded as Battlegrounds Mobile India. Ahead of the launch, the game’s new website has gone live. The developers have also quietly changed the logo on the company’s official YouTube channel. Battlegrounds Mobile India pre-registrations will begin soon in India. The website now confirms that the Battlegrounds Mobile India release date is imm

The return of Google TV is pushing TiVo away from Android

A year ago the  TiVo Stream 4K dongle  launched for $50 (it's now selling for  $40 ), applying the company's software to provide a front end to streaming services while running on Android. The idea is that with their knowledge of content and easy access, it could pull out the items viewers really want from the various silos, and make cord cutting more accessible.  In late 2019 then-CEO Dave Shull said they were betting the future of the company on this plan, but just a few months after the Stream 4K launched a problem popped up: Google released its new Chromecast with a "Google TV" interface that offers features like recommendations and individual profiles that are very similar to what TiVo is trying to offer.  So what's next?   ZatzNotFunny  points out an earnings call this week from TiVo owner Xperi that highlighted the problem and their updated direction as a result. The transcripts  on Seeking Alpha  show what Xperi CEO Jon Kirchner said in response to a que

Google Stadia has figured out a way to ditch the fancy gamepad for TV play

Today, there’s only one official way to play Google’s Stadia game streaming service on your 4K TV — the last-gen Chromecast Ultra, connected to the company’s proprietary Stadia Controller over Wi-Fi. That’s because Google hasn’t yet brought Stadia  to the new-and-improved $50 Chromecast , and its predecessor didn’t support Bluetooth, meaning the only way to pair a controller was to loop through Google’s servers in the cloud. But Google now has a workaround,   9to5Google  reports . There’s a new “bridge mode” hidden in the latest version of the Stadia app on Android that should let you send controller signals from your phone — letting you play Stadia with your phone’s touchscreen, or even connect another gamepad to your phone. You’ll be able to use your phone to change your TV’s volume, too, according to text snippets buried in the APK. The original Stadia Controller has been something of a thorn in the company’s side ever since Stadia launched on November 19th, 2019, so it wouldn’t

YouTube TV is now available on PS5

Sony PlayStation 5 now fully supports YouTube TV live streaming with a dedicated app from the PlayStation Store. If you are in the elite group of YouTube TV subscribers and PS5 owner, you can now enjoy all of your favourite shows and channels without having to cast an envious glance at Xbox owners, 9To5Google reported. The PS5’s YouTube TV app is ready for download from the PlayStation Store. For those lucky enough to have their hands on the router-looking entertainment system, the addition of YouTube TV live-streaming support is another big bonus, the report said. Sony’s latest gaming system was recently added to Google’s official device support list. Microsoft’s latest consoles have been able to use YouTube TV since launch day. Part of this is owed to the OS and compatibility of existing Xbox One apps, which is one of the reasons the Series S and X have had one core advantage over the PS5. Recently, the company announced that it managed to sell 7.8 million PlayStation 5 consoles till

Google asks Android app developers to show user privacy labels on Play Store

In late 2020, Apple had made it mandatory for developers registered with Apple App Store to show a privacy label, that discloses what and how much user data is being tracked and stored. And, last week, Apple launched the App Tracking Transparency feature with the iOS 14.5 (& iPadOS 14.5) update to give full control to users to completely block the tracking and storing information. Now, Google has taken a leaf out of Apple's user privacy guidelines. The search engine giant has announced that it will ask Android app developers to come clean on user data tracking and collection. Some of the key aspects Android app developers will be disclosing on Play store include: 1) Whether the app has a proper security practice, like data encryption 2) Whether the app follows Google's Families policy 3 ) Why the app needs the data (user's personal info) to function or if users have a choice in sharing it 4) Whether the app’s safety section is verified by an independent third-party 5) T

The 6 recent Android 12 leaks we're most excited to see

Android 12 is still months away from its official rollout (likely in September), but that hasn't stopped a torrent of new leaked features in the lead up to Google IO 2021 , where we'll see a more official version. XDA Developers acquired an unreleased, experimental version of Android 12 in April. After diving deep into the code, the site has found dozens of new twists that you won't find in the first , second or third developer previews. And other leaked features have arisen since then. But there are a few new tricks that would absolutely benefit Android phone owners if they make it to the official release or public beta. Here are six leaked Android 12 features you should watch out for later in 2021. Google brings Gboard to Wear OS, says more exciting features are coming

A lot of people will agree that Google’s handling of Wear OS has been very disappointing, to say the least. The operating system which was designed to power smartwatches lags behind when compared to Apple’s own watchOS and Samsung’s Tizen . Things are about to change for the better according to Google and the first step is the announcement of Gboard for Wear OS. Gboard for Wear OS is said to be the first new app for the operating system in years. The announcement brings a much easier and faster way for users to type. According to Google, Gboard brings multi-language support, scrollable word suggestions, voice input, gesture typing, and a full QWERTY keyboard. Google seems to have more interesting things in store for Wear OS as it has said that it can’t wait to share the other things it has planned for the operating system this year. Future Pixel phones may get unlimited Google Photos backups with new “Storage Saver” option

Starting next month, Google Photos will no longer offer free unlimited storage for storing “High quality” photos. That means any new photos uploaded to Google Photos after June 1, 2021, regardless of whether it’s “High quality,” “Original quality, or Express quality, will count towards the 15GB limit allotted to your Google Account. And you’ll have to pay for Google One subscription if you run out of that limit. Luckily, current Google Pixel phones aren’t affected by this and will continue to get unlimited high-quality uploads for life. There have been reports that Google wasn’t planning to offer this perk on future Pixels. And the company even officially confirmed that future Pixel phones indeed wouldn’t get unlimited high-quality photo backups . But it appears Google could still offer some form of unlimited backups on future Pixel phones. In Google Photos app v5.4.1, we have found evidence of a new Storage saver photo quality option that could allow future Pixel phones to avail

Selected Lenovo laptops getting a new Alexa mode bringing Echo Show functions

Earlier this year, tech giant Amazon announced a new “Show Mode” for the PC version of the Alexa app. The feature hopes to expand the user base of Amazon’s smart home app as it brings features that are found on the Echo Show including skills that can be activated only by a voice prompt. The company has now announced that the feature will be making its debut on some Lenovo laptops. Amazon describes the Show Mode for PCs as a “voice-first, interactive Alexa experience for PCs”. The mode can be activated via a voice command asking the virtual assistant to open the feature. It can also be activated using the Show Mode icon domiciled in the Alexa app. When activated, the app displays in fullscreen mode on the PC’s screen, showing information that the user will find vital. The interface is exactly as it is on the Echo Show with features such as calendar appointments, weather information, and others. In addition, users can perform actions such as playing a song on Amazon Music, controlling

Sundar Pichai lays out Google's new 'hybrid' workplace plan

With some Google employees returning to the company's offices voluntarily  last month , CEO Sundar Pichai says the tech giant will adopt a new  hybrid work week . In an expansion of a  pilot that started in December , most employees will spend approximately three days working out of the office and the other two "wherever they work best." How that split will work out in practice will depend on a worker's product focus and the team they're a part of. Additionally, Google will offer more opportunities for employees to move around. By mid-June, it will introduce a process that will allow workers to apply to work from a different office. What's more, all employees will have the chance to work up to four weeks away from their assigned office temporarily. Google also plans to develop more remote roles and even teams made up entirely of people that aren't all in one place. The company will also allow employees to apply for remote work within their product area.

Google announces Entertainment Space for Android tablets

Android tablets still exist, somehow. And people may still be buying them, for some reason. All of this in spite of Google's best efforts to simply ignore the form factor completely for the past few years, and we don't mean just by not releasing any more of its own tablets, but also in not adapting Android to the bigger screen sizes at all. Today the search giant has suddenly remembered that Android tablets exist, and has thus announced a new feature, just for Android tablets. Can you believe it? Something in Android, tailor-made for tablets. Hell is freezing over, surely. Anyway, that's probably enough snark and you may be wondering what this is. It's called Entertainment Space, and, well, the name is pretty descriptive. Google describes it as "a one-stop, personalized home for all your favorite movies, shows, videos, games, and books". It lets you not go through the trouble of hopping between apps to try and figure out what's where, taking care of that f

Google accidentally announces the Pixel Buds A on Twitter

It is no news that a more affordable pair of Google’s own earbuds , the Pixel Buds , is coming. Today, the new pair of earbuds called the Pixel Buds A was accidentally announced by the official Android Twitter account.                           The now-deleted tweet showed the earbuds in white along with a Pixel phone with a dialog box on its screen. The tweet confirms that the Pixel Buds A has Fast Pair, a service that uses Bluetooth Low Energy and your device’s location feature to find compatible Bluetooth devices in range and allow you to connect to the Bluetooth device with just one tap. Fast Pair will also register all connected Bluetooth accessories to your Google account which then syncs with all your Android devices connected to that account. It also has a Find My Device feature to help you find your lost Bluetooth accessory. Seeing as Google deleted the tweet shortly after it sent it out, it is safe to assume that the device is not yet ready to launch. However, it is expecte

Here’s why Nova Launcher works better on Google Pixel phones

In the past, third-party launcher apps often provided a superior experience to the stock launcher found on most Android phones. With the revamp of the recent apps screen and the introduction of gestures in Android 9 Pie, though, third-party launchers were put at a disadvantage as these new experiences were integrated into the stock launcher app. Over time, Google has tried to make the third-party launcher experience not so terrible when using gestures, and they’ve actually started to succeed at this recently. If you’ve used a recent Nova Launcher beta release on a Google Pixel phone in the last few months, you might have noticed the fluid animations when using gesture navigation. Unfortunately, you won’t see these same animations when using Nova Launcher on any other device, at least for now. To understand why we first need to briefly explain what separates third-party launchers like Nova Launcher from stock launchers like Google’s Pixel Launcher. Google first introduced gesture n

Stadia product head John Justice leaves Google

It wouldn't be a stretch to say that 2021 has been a tumultuous year for  Google Stadia . The highs have included the promise of  100 new games  (to add to its  target of 400 titles ) including high-profile gets like  FIFA 21 ,  Outriders and  Resident Evil Village . But, it's the lows that have inevitably garnered the most interest and  borne questions  over Google's commitment to its  promising  cloud gaming service. The latest news of a managerial departure at Stadia is likely to add fuel to the fire over the future of the fledgling gaming service.  TheInformation  has reported that VP and head of product at Stadia John Justice has left Google. The exec was responsible for the consumer experience at Stadia and had previously spoken about his team's tendency to overpromise on new features. Back in 2019, Google's streaming service infamously launched without a number of hyped social features including State Share and Crowd Play. More recently, Stadia abruptly deb

Facebook, Google, Twitter caution Australia against a blanket terrorism content ban

Representatives from Google, Facebook, and Twitter on Friday appeared before an Australian security committee as a united front, spruiking the idea that they're all working together to thwart nefarious activity, such as violent extremist material, from proliferating their respective platforms. The trio told the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security as part of its inquiry into extremist movements and radicalism in Australia that the effort is a joint one and that the best way forward was to not actually legislate a ban of all mentions of content deemed inappropriate. "We all know combating terrorism and extremism is a continuous challenge. And unless we can completely eliminate hate and intolerance from society, there's going to be hate and intolerance online," Facebook Australia's head of policy Josh Machin said. "It's also a shared challenge between governments, industry experts, academia, civil society, and the media." As

Google and Vodafone are building a powerful new data platform

Google and Vodafone announced they're  extending their partnership  by six years, in part to build a powerful new data platform that can support the movement of 5,000 data feeds per day to the cloud.  The platform will allow Vodafone to better leverage its vasts sums of data, so they can offer new digital products and services to customers globally. While Vodafone and Google are building the platform to serve the telecom giant's needs, the companies will also explore the possibility of providing consultancy services to other businesses, either jointly or independently.  Vodafone first decided to move its large, on-premise big data systems to the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) more than two years ago. Now, as part of their extended partnership, Vodafone is re-platforming its SAP system and moving them to GCP.  They're also co-innovating the new platform, called Nucleus, to integrate all of Vodafone's global data with a standard data model and common processes, data so

Google Assistant to get new features; will soon be able to pronounce names correctly

Google Assistant is getting a better way to correct its name pronunciation, as well as improved contextual awareness when it comes to setting and changing timers with your voice.  In the blog post announcing the changes , Google says they should be rolling out in the next few days. If Assistant has been pronouncing your name wrong, the new way to try to fix that is pretty simple: you can just say your name out loud, and Google will try to learn the pronunciation. The old way, which is still available for those who wanted it, required you to spell out the way you wanted your name pronounced. If you’re looking to try it for yourself, you can go to the Google Assistant settings, then Basic Info, then Nickname. It is worth noting that you can’t completely divorce your text name from the pronunciation — telling it to call me “Jennifer” while having my nickname as Mitchell resulted in it saying “Mithl” (like  Mithril , without the ri). The blog post and video also show that this will w

Covid-19 patients now starved at Telangana's TIMS Hospital

Hundreds of Covid-19 patients have not been fed on time for many hours at the Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences over the past 36 hours. This follows the TIMS management, a hospital run by the Telangana State Government, banning patient attendants and families from bringing food from home, or outside, for delivery to their loved ones undergoing treatment for Covid-19 at the hospital. A patient in the hospital, who reached out to this correspondent was in tears reporting that another patient in a ward he was in, died from hunger. “That patient was a diabetic and did not get dinner last night, and breakfast this morning. He just died of hunger. Please help us get food on time,” the patient begged. “Please call the Director, the doctors or anyone. We are hungry,” the patient pleaded. With most patients at TIMS on high doses of steroids as part of the Covid-19 treatment, their hunger levels stay high, which in turn means they need to be fed well, and multiple meals if needed
