Apple Watch used to monitor heart rate of premature baby born mid-flight: Report

In what can only be described as being in the right place at the right time, a doctor on board a flight to Hawaii was able to save a premature baby that was born mid-air using his wits, along with other objects on the plane – and an Apple Watch. The incident occurred during a flight to Honolulu, when the newborn Raymond Mounga’s mother Lavinia went into labour in the washroom, as reported by KHON2 . Mounga didn’t even know she was pregnant, so the arrival of the baby who was born at 29 weeks instead of 40 weeks, was a surprise for everyone on board. We Could Really Have a Wireless Power Grid That Runs on 5G

If you've ever owned a  Tile tracker —a square, white Bluetooth beacon that connects to your phone to help keep tabs on your wallet, keys, or whatever else you're prone to losing—you're familiar with low-power Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. Just like other small IoT devices, from  voice assistants  to  tiny chemical sensors  that can detect gas leaks, Tile trackers require a power source. It's not realistic to hook these gadgets up to a wall outlet, and having to constantly change batteries is a waste of time that's ultimately bad for the environment. But what if you could wirelessly charge those devices with a power source that's already all around you? Researchers at Georgia Tech have dreamed up this kind of "wireless power grid" with a small device that harvests the  electromagnetic energy  that  5G  base stations routinely emit. Just like the 3G and 4G cell phone towers that came before, 5G base stations radiate electromagnetic e...

Apple Watch could get blood sugar monitoring thanks to a UK tech deal

The longstanding rumors of an  Apple Watch with blood sugar monitoring  just gained some credibility.  The Telegraph  and  Forbes  report that UK health tech firm Rockley Photonics recently  confirmed  in an SEC filing that Apple has been its largest customer for the past two years, and that it has a continuing deal to develop future products. Rockley's focus has been on sensors that track blood glucose, pressure and even alcohol levels, suggesting that at least one of these features will be available in a future  Apple Watch . Apple's support for diabetics has so far been limited to carrying third-party monitors in its stores.  There's no guarantee the Rockley deal will lead to shipping products. Apple hasn't been shy about focusing the Apple Watch on health, however, and there's plenty of industry interest in developing wearable blood sugar sensors that don't require needles. If Apple can build the technology into a ...

Users demand intrusion-free private messaging: Facebook

The company said that while it expects to make more progress on default end-to-end encryption for Messenger and Instagram Direct this year, it’s a long-term project As the use of private messaging with apps like Messenger surges in the pandemic, people are demanding the experience free from unwanted intrusions, more protection from scams and hacking and privacy controls, according to Facebook. The company said that while it expects to make more progress on default end-to-end encryption for Messenger and Instagram Direct this year, it’s a long-term project and it won’t be fully end-to-end encrypted until sometime in 2022 at the earliest. The users want to know how their data is being used and what data is accessible by Facebook or others when messaging. “We should consider ways to give people more privacy settings and features within our messaging apps. This also requires thoughtful product design and user education to make the features easy to find and easy to use,” the company said in...

Mining Cryptocurrency Such as Chia Will Void Your SSD Warranty

SSD maker Galax is warning users that mining cryptocurrencies that require excessive volume and speed on storage devices will void warranty of its SSDs. The company posted a notice on its Chinese website to warn users about losing their SSDs' warranty amid a large number of people looking to mine Chia, a new cryptocurrency created by BitTorrent protocol developer Bram Cohen. Unlike commonly known cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin and Ethereum that require powerful processing, Chia demands more storage over processing for its mining.                                       Without specifically naming Chia, Galax said in the notice that the users of its SSDs would void their warranty if they use them for mining cryptocurrencies resulting in much higher data write volume than the regular usage patterns. The Hong Kong-based company becomes one of the first SSD manufacturers to...

Twitter May Struggle to Replicate Bumper 2020

Twitter will struggle to replicate a bumper 2020 dominated by the US political battles, civil unrest, and the COVID-19 crisis as people venture out following vaccine rollouts, Wall Street analysts said on Friday.                          The lifting of restrictions as people get vaccinated has largely seen benefiting other digital ad firms such as Facebook and Alphabet's Google whose stocks soared after reporting blockbuster results this week. Not so with Twitter . Shares sank more than 12 percent on Friday after the social media company reported first-quarter revenue and user numbers mostly in line with analyst estimates and warned the current quarter could be its worse as it eyed a weaker 2021. "The company's weak future guidance suggests that repeating this performance will be extremely difficult," said Haris Anwar, senior analyst at Investing.com, adding that more people will look to engage in of...
