Amazon India probes complaints, finds two employees who were replacing costly gadgets with cheaper items.
The Sewri Police have booked two employees of Amazon India for cheating the
company and its customers by allegedly replacing costly gadgets such as laptops
from customers’ parcels with cheaper items. Initial probe reveals that they
stole at least 10 laptops using this modus operandi.
The accused have been identified as Waris Khan, 20, and Wajid Khan, 21, who
worked as packing boys for the e-commerce giant.
According to the FIR lodged by Amazon’s legal
manager, the products ordered by the customers are kept in the company’s godown
before being dispatched for delivery.
Recently, the Mumbai team received information from the company’s Delhi head
office about several customers being cheated. The customers had complained that
they did not receive the products that they ordered from the Sewri godown in
Mumbai.
The legal manager, who is responsible for investigating such matters, started
inquiry into customers’ complaints.
In one case, the manager found that a customer had ordered four laptops but
when he opened the parcel, he found chargers instead.
The police said the two accused were responsible for picking up products from
dealers and then bring them to the godown. After completing the formalities, a
product is dispatched to the customer’s address. During its internal inquiry,
the company came across several cases when the packing boys are seen collecting
big parcels from shops but by the time they reach the godown, the box gets
smaller. This, the police say, shows that the accused would collect the right
product from the shop concerned but would replace it with a cheaper item. The
cheaper product would be dispatched to the customer.
“The initial probe found that the duo duped the company of 10 laptops worth Rs
3.30 lakh between October and December. Our investigation on, and we are trying
to ascertain what the accused have done with the products and with how many
other customers they have cheated,” said a police officer.
The duo has been booked under section 408 (criminal breach of trust), 420
(cheating) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
