Centre moves SC against Karnataka HC order asking enhancement of oxygen for state

The Centre Thursday moved the Supreme Court against the Karnataka High Court order asking it to increase the daily liquid medical oxygen (LMO) allocation for the state to 1,200 MT from the present 965 MT. The Centre has also sought a stay on the high court order. A bench headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud was told by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that the state is being supplied 965 MT LMO presently and the order needed to be stayed urgently. The bench also comprising Justice M R Shah, in its hearing, said it will have to look at the paper book before issuing any order regarding the issue. Meanwhile, the opposition Congress was quick to respond as it expressed “shock” over the Centre moving the apex court against the order of the Karnataka High Court. Stating that he was “shocked” over the development, President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee D K Shivakumar claimed that the projected demand in Karnataka is 1,471 MT when the Central allocation is only 865 MT. “Will CM @BSYBJP

How tech may be ‘limiting’ vaccine outreach in India

Indian tech experts have written software code and designed websites to help people book scarce Covid-19 vaccinations online, raising concern about an unfair advantage for the tech savvy and jeopardising chances of an equitable vaccine rollout. India has faced criticism for a slow vaccine campaign as it battles a second wave of coronavirus infections that is seeing about 350,000 new cases recorded every day. Only 2% of its 1.3 billion population have been fully immunized. The government further opened up vaccination for adults from May 1 but registration on its CoWIN website is mandatory for those between the ages of 18 and 44. Slots are hard to get as demand far outstrips supply. In a bid to streamline the process, computer experts have used the publicly available coding of the CoWIN platform to create websites that post results every few minutes after running automated searches on the government website. Alerts are sent over email and routed to several Telegram app chat groups wh

Serum Institute of India to Invest 240 Million Pounds in UK

Vaccine maker the Serum Institute of India is set to invest in facilities in Britain and could even manufacture inoculations in the UK in future, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Monday. Johnson’s Downing Street office said the £240 million ($334 million) project would include a sales office, “clinical trials, research and development and possibly manufacturing of vaccines". The Serum Institute of India (SII) is the world’s largest vaccine maker by volume, and has been at the forefront of producing the lower-cost AstraZeneca coronavirus shot. SII has also begun phase one trials in the UK of a one-dose nasal vaccine for coronavirus. Downing Street said the vaccine maker’s plans were part of a wider package of trade and investment deals with India worth £1 billion that it expects to create over 6,500 jobs. It was announced ahead of virtual talks between Johnson and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday. COVID SUPPORT With its massive population and growing economy,

The fresh fatalities pushed the cumulative death toll to 2,476.    The case fatality rate moved up to 0.53 per cent against the national average of 1.1 per cent. The state also reported 6,876 new Covid cases during the 24-hour period that ended 8 p.m. Monday. This has pushed the cumulative tally of cases to 4,63,361. Government and private laboratories tested 70,961 samples during the 24-hour period.   Over the last 10 days, average 70,000 tests are being conducted daily against 1 lakh to 1.3 lakh during the second and third weeks of April. Fringe Benefits: Do celeb endorsements of COVID vaccines help?

“I just want to say to all of you cowards out there: Don’t be such a chicken squat,” Parton (inset), 75, said in a video after receiving her vaccine in Tennessee. “Get out there and get your shot.” This is hardly the first time public figures have thrown their popularity behind an effort to change the behavior of ordinary people. In medicine, celebrity endorsements tend to echo or reinforce messages that health authorities are trying to publicise, whether it’s getting a vaccine, or other medical treatment. In 18th-century Russia, Catherine the Great was inoculated against smallpox as part of her campaign to promote the nationwide rollout of the procedure. Almost 200 years later, backstage at “The Ed Sullivan Show,” Elvis Presley received the polio vaccine in an effort to help reach at-risk teenagers.    But do the star-studded endorsements really work? Not necessarily. Epidemiologists say there are plenty of caveats and potential pitfalls — and little scientific evidence to prove t

Modi government chokes dissent on India's COVID apocalypse with social media blocks

Even seemingly straightforward accounts on the unfolding COVID-19 catastrophe in India -- never mind ones that contain direct, scathing criticism -- are the sort of things that Modi and his government want expunged from social media. Politicians  and  others  are dubbing it a "Modi Made Disaster" on Twitter, Facebook, and other forms of social media, but you may never read these posts. This is because the Indian government has been busy ordering the platforms to  take down  the large number of posts flagged by them that are critical of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist government's handling of the latest devastating wave of the pandemic. "Not a surprise. But terrifying nonetheless,"  tweeted  author and activist Naomi Klein, as  reported  by the publication  Truthout,  who has previously  written  about the authoritarian ways in which Modi's government has throttled basic free speech in India. Over the last six days, I

Scaling Up The Biopharmaceutical Supply Chain In Response To COVID-19

As the pandemic advances into its second year, the biopharmaceutical industry is moving fast to overcome the logistical complexities of rolling out a large-scale, global vaccination program. Innovative new methodologies are being deployed to increase visibility across the supply chain and make it more agile. Collaboration at an unprecedented level among all parties involved in the development and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines is critical to success. Scaling up the supply chain to meet demand requires the development of solutions capable of rationalizing the procurement of vaccine ingredients, managing manufacturing constraints, and streamlining distribution. Life science organizations must address balancing supply and demand in a highly volatile market made more complex from multiple government agency requests. Using simulations and modeling tools to recognize demand patterns, they quickly learn where vaccines were most needed. The next challenge is getting vaccines produced.

NEET-PG exam postponed for 4 months, medical interns can be deployed for Covid duty

Amidst the rising COVID-19 cases in the country, the Centre on Monday postponed NEET-PG exam for four months and allowed medical interns to be deployed in Covid management duties under the supervision of their faculty. "A decision was taken to postpone NEET-PG for at least 4 months and the exam will not be held before 31st August 2021. Students will also be given atleast one month of time after announcement of exam before it is conducted. This will make a large number of qualified doctors available for Covid duties," the government said in a release. Besides, it allowed utilising services of final year PG students (broad as well as super-specialities) as residents until fresh batches of PG students join. "It was also decided to allow deployment of medical interns in Covid Management duties under the supervision of their faculty, as part of the internship rotation."   In order to further augment the manpower to find the pandemic, the government said services

Music jingle create awareness about wearing face masks

“The usage of face masks by people in Chennai and Tamil Nadu is just 65 to 70 per cent. We wanted more people to wear masks. Even those who use masks are not wearing them properly — we have seen people wearing the mask on their chin or covering eyes. When we were discussing how to create awareness on this, Kishore Manohar came up with the idea of a campaign,” says Siddarth Ganeriwala of Chennai Tri-colour Initiative.   The video was created by a Chennai-based creative agency called Crazy Pencilz in just a few hours because the team wanted to influence people who would come out to celebrate after election results. The music was done by Aravind-Shankar. “Everyone has their opinion when it comes to wearing masks and it is a delicate topic when you ask someone to wear their mask properly. We don’t know how the other person is going to react and we don’t want to get into a tricky situation. This is a light-hearted way of reminding the public to wear masks,” Kishore Manohar tells DT Next

Powerful Indians making aggressive calls for vaccines: Poonawalla

Admitting that he’s dealing with immense stress from “among the strongest folks in India” demanding provides of Covishield, Serum Institute of India (SII) CEO Adar Poonawalla stated on Saturday that the corporate can be planning to start out vaccine manufacturing within the UK, the media reported. In an interview with The Instances, Poonawalla stated that all the pieces falls on his shoulders on the subject of delivering the COVID-19 vaccine to hundreds of thousands in India. “I’m staying right here (London) for an prolonged time as a result of I don’t need to return to that state of affairs. The whole lot falls on my shoulders, however I can’t do it alone…I don’t need to be in a state of affairs the place you’re simply attempting to do your job, and simply because you’ll be able to’t provide the wants of X, Y or Z, you actually don’t need to guess what they will do,” Poonawalla advised The Instances. Covid education and learning will crack pandemic – not coercion, claims PROFESSOR JACKIE CASSELL

Last week I signed a letter to this newspaper, widely criticised for its content and signatories. We advocated an end to legal restrictions on June 21 and of masking in schools from May 17. We called on government to abandon plans for vaccine or immunity certification and to provide better financial and practical support for people affected by Covid. The co-signatories come from both political extremes and centre ground, and from multiple health, biologicаl аnd sociаl sciences.
