iPhones will switch to Apple's own 5G modems in 2023 "at the earliest"

Apple brought CPU and GPU development in-house and rumors have been swirling since at least 2019 that it wants to design its own 5G modems. Back then it was believed that the first own silicon modems will appear in 2022 iPhones, but the latest investors note by Ming-Chi Kuo revises that to “2023 at the earliest”. This lines up with an earlier report by a team of analysts at Barclays who also point to 2023. The modem will support both sub-6 and mmWave 5G. Apple first officially confirmed that it has started work on a modem in December 2020 . A couple of months ago it announced a €1 billion investment years to build a new R&D facility in Munich, Germany. Its main goals will be developing 5G and future wireless technologies, but it will also explore other technologies. Besides Apple’s desire to control the whole hardware and software stack for its products, the modem business proved quite contentious – a patent dispute caused Apple to drop its long-term modem supplier, Qualcomm, an

Audio-based social startup Clubhouse finally releases an Android app

Audio-based social startup Clubhouse has finally released an Android app at a time when the much-hyped company has seen its popularity start to decline. The app, initially available only in beta in the U.S. ahead of a wider global launch and release, is, like the iOS version, still invite-only. That means that although Android users now have the potential to access the service, they can’t simply sign up. “Our plan over the next few weeks is to collect feedback from the community, fix any issues we see and work to add a few final features like payments and club creation before rolling it out more broadly,” Clubhouse said in a blog post . “As a part of the effort to keep the growth measured, we will be continuing the waitlist and invite system, ensuring that each new community member can bring along a few close friends.” Clubhouse has become one of the most hyped tech startups over the last year, with venture capital funding to match. In April , Clubhouse raised a Series C round on a val

ust 12% of global iOS users and 4% of US ones have allowed app tracking since the iOS 14.5 rollout

Nobody was ever in doubt that Apple's new anti-app tracking (ATT) feature, rolled-out with iOS 14.5 would have a major impact on the way targeted advertisement works and consequently, any company with a business model built around it. Like Facebook and its subsidiaries, like Instagram - some of the most severely-affected parties and naturally among the most vocal against ATT .                         Having a hunch that a certain change is significant, though, is not the same as getting some actual data on just how significant it is. The Verizon Media-owned Flurry Analytics has its mobile analytics services integrated in over 1 million mobile applications and collects aggregate insights on over 2 billion mobile devices each month. According to Flurry's data, just around 12% of global users have allowed app tracking for apps that requested it on their devices post the iOS 14.5 update. And that number is just 4% in the US. Just to clarify, in case you are not familiar with how A

Zoom has special access to your iPad's camera

Wondering why you can multitask during a Zoom video call on your iPad when you can't with other apps? Zoom isn't being sneaky — it's just taking advantage of a good relationship. As 9to5Mac reports , developer Jeremy Provost has learned that Zoom has special permission from Apple to use the iPad's camera during Split View multitasking. The company told Provost it received a private "entitlement" letting it use a multitasking-friendly programming interface that's normally off-limits outside of FaceTime. Entitlements aren't new, but they're typically public and just require that developers walk through a process to enable them. You can ask for CarPlay integration for a navigation app, for example. The iPad camera entitlement, however, is undocumented and only available to those Apple considers "worthy," according to Provost. We've asked Apple for comment. It's not surprising that Zoom would get this access. The video chat app has

Apple Watch used to monitor heart rate of premature baby born mid-flight: Report

In what can only be described as being in the right place at the right time, a doctor on board a flight to Hawaii was able to save a premature baby that was born mid-air using his wits, along with other objects on the plane – and an Apple Watch. The incident occurred during a flight to Honolulu, when the newborn Raymond Mounga’s mother Lavinia went into labour in the washroom, as reported by KHON2 . Mounga didn’t even know she was pregnant, so the arrival of the baby who was born at 29 weeks instead of 40 weeks, was a surprise for everyone on board. And so I’m yelling, ‘Mimi! Th

Apple is giving a laser company that builds some of its AR tech $410 million

Apple  has announced  that it’s awarding Pennsylvania-based optical technology company II-IV with $410 million from its Advanced Manufacturing Fund. Apple CEO  Tim Cook tweeted  that the company’s tech helps power Apple’s FaceID, Memoji, and Portrait Mode. The company also manufactures lasers that are used in the LIDAR scanner found in the iPhone 12 Pro and iPad Pro, technology that Apple touts as being key to augmented reality experiences. Finisar, which was  later acquired by II-VI  (pronounced “two-six”) received $390 million from Apple’s fund back in 2017. While this latest investment likely shows that Apple intends to keep FaceID (which is powered by II-IV’s vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers) around for a while, it could also be another sign pointing to Apple’s future with AR and VR. Tim Cook has publicly said that he believes AR is “critically important” to Apple’s future, and II-IV manufactures devices that help computers see the world in 3D. The money could help devel

Twitter for Android and iOS Now Rolling Out Full-Size Image Previews, Here's How to Looks

Twitter is rolling out a new update that essentially displays larger images on the app for a better viewing experience. Until now, both Twitter for Android and iOS as well as the web client auto-cropped images, and the AI displayed the subject based on face-points and machine learning. With the latest development, at least single uploads will be displayed in full size though the exact functioning remains unclear when users post more than one image. The new feature is rolling out worldwide; however, the process appears to gradual. Twitter app users including those in India must ensure they are using the latest version to enjoy the feature. Twitter shared the development in a tweet earlier today. “Introducing bigger and better images on iOS and Android, now available to everyone," the micro-blogging platform said. Meanwhile, Twitter has started rolling out Spaces in India that brings audio-based chatroom within the app. The Twitter Spaces aims to take on Clubhouse, the iOS app (so

Here’s the New iOS 14.5 App Tracking Transparency Feature That Facebook Isn't Too Happy About

With the latest iOS 14.5 update, Apple has introduced an important and controversial feature called App Tracking Transparency (ATT) that lets you block apps from tracking your online activities. Once you update your iPhone to the latest version, you will get a pop-up notification on apps asking your permission if you want to let them track your activity across other companies' apps and websites. If you choose Allow, apps will continue collecting your data like your age, location, health information, spending habits, browsing history and much more, and sell this information to advertisers and data brokers. And, then these third parties will target you with personalized ads on websites and apps. But, if you choose the Ask App Not To Track option, apps will not have the permission to collect your data and sell it to third parties. Thus, making it difficult for brands to target you with ads. If you can't see the new app tracking pop-ups on apps even after updating your iPhone,

Kuo, in his research note also said that he believes that the foldable iPhone will adopt a silver nanowire touch solution for the device’s display, which will create a “long-term competitive advantage" for Apple in the foldable device market. This display technology will be needed for future foldable devices that support more

You should update your iPhone and iPad to iOS 14.5.1 right away

The update includes security fixes for bugs that are actively being exploited. Apple on Monday released iOS 14.5.1 and iPadOS 14.5.1 for its iPhone and iPad lineup. The update comes just a week after  iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5   were officially released, but there's a good reason for the back-to-back updates: It includes a fix for two security issues that, according to Apple, are actively being used.  According to a  security post  about Monday's update, there are two WebKit bugs that "Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited." The issue impacts the iPhone 6S or newer, all iPad Pro models, the iPad Air 2 or newer, the iPad 5th generation or newer, the iPad Mini 4 or later, and the latest iPod touch.  To update your device, open  Settings > General > Software Update  and follow the prompts. Apple faces down 'Fortnite' creator Epic Games in major antitrust trial

(Reuters) -Attorneys for "Fortnite" creator Epic Games and Apple Inc will make opening arguments Monday at an antitrust trial whose ultimate outcome could affect Apple's fast-growing App Store business. The lawsuit, which Epic brought last year in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, centers on two of Apple practices that have become cornerstones of its business: Apple's requirement that virtually all third-party software for the world's 1 billion iPhones be distributed through its App Store, and the requirement that developers use Apple's in-app purchase system, which charges commissions of up to 30%. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers will preside over the three-week trial in a courtroom in Oakland, California. Apple's legal team from Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher arrived at the courthouse Monday morning with about 20 boxes of documents, followed by Phil Schiller, Apple's App Store chief. Epic's legal team from Cravath, Swa

Apple Watch could get blood sugar monitoring thanks to a UK tech deal

The longstanding rumors of an  Apple Watch with blood sugar monitoring  just gained some credibility.  The Telegraph  and  Forbes  report that UK health tech firm Rockley Photonics recently  confirmed  in an SEC filing that Apple has been its largest customer for the past two years, and that it has a continuing deal to develop future products. Rockley's focus has been on sensors that track blood glucose, pressure and even alcohol levels, suggesting that at least one of these features will be available in a future  Apple Watch . Apple's support for diabetics has so far been limited to carrying third-party monitors in its stores.  There's no guarantee the Rockley deal will lead to shipping products. Apple hasn't been shy about focusing the Apple Watch on health, however, and there's plenty of industry interest in developing wearable blood sugar sensors that don't require needles. If Apple can build the technology into a mainstream product like the Watch, it co

Apple Watch May Get Blood Pressure, Glucose, Alcohol Level Monitoring Feature in Future

Apple Watch may in the future be able to monitor the wearers' blood pressure, apart from glucose and alcohol levels, as per a report. The Cupertino-based company has reportedly struck a deal with a British electronics startup that designs sensors for monitoring blood using infrared light. The timeline for the launch of the speculated new Apple Watch model is not known yet. To recall, Apple was recently reported to be working on a new rugged variant as well. People familiar with the development had suggested that this second model will be aimed at athletes and extreme sports enthusiasts. As per a report by The Telegraph, via The Indian Express , a US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing for the startup called Rockley Photonics revealed that Apple is one of its few large customers. It is possible that the glucose and alcohol level monitoring may be launched in a future Apple Watch model. The startup reportedly stated the two largest customers accounted for 100 perce

Apple Watch may get blood sugar monitoring feature, claims new report

A new report states that a future Apple Watch could feature various new health sensors to measure blood glucose, blood pressure and alcohol levels. An SEC filing for UK startup Rockley Photonics has revealed a significant relationship with Apple, that may result in the introduction of blood sugar monitoring functions to future products. Rockley Photonics is a UK-based company that is involved in designing sensors for monitoring blood using infrared light. The sensors are said to be capable of monitoring blood glucose and alcohol levels, which is normally possible using medical or specialised equipment. According to an SEC filing first reported by the UK’s Telegraph, Rockley Photonics is preparing to go public in New York, and Apple is identified as one of its few large customers. Rockley has stated the two largest customers accounted for 100 per cent of the firm’s revenue in 2020, and 99.6 per cent in 2019. While we don’t know for sure if Apple is the company’s biggest or second

Epic-backed expert says Apple’s app store profit is as high as 78 percent

An expert witness for Epic Games testified that Apple’s App Store had operating margins above 70 percent in fiscal years 2018 and 2019,  new court documents show.  Ned Barnes testified that information from Apple’s Corporate Financial Planning and Analysis group show the App Store had a 77.8 percent operating margin in 2019, and 74.9 percent in 2018. The figures are close to Barnes’ calculations of the App Store’s profits, he testified, and “also refute criticisms of my report proffered by certain Apple expert witnesses that it is not possible to calculate reliably or usefully the operating margins of the App Store.” Barnes also testified that Apple has been tracking its App Store profits for several years. Apple has hotly contested that interpretation of the data.  As  Bloomberg  notes , Apple’s chief compliance officer said at a congressional hearing last month that “we don’t have a separate profit and loss statement for the App Store,” and that Cook has made similar statements abo

An out-of-warranty 12.9-inch iPad Pro 2021 will cost $699 to repair without AppleCare+, per the updated iPad Service and Repair chart spotted by MacRumors . This is $50 more than the repair fee for the previous model. This fee will apply for accidental damages even if the device has less than a year of usage if you don't have AppleCare+. If there is an issue because of a manufacturing fault, it will be covered by the initial one-year warranty. Charges have not changed for the new 11-inch model which retains a Liquid Retina LCD screen and it will cost $499 to repair without AppleCare‌+. Under AppleCare‌+, the service fee is $49 for both models. Apple charges $149 for two years of ‌AppleCare‌+. If you get a $7.99 subscription, it will cover the entire lifespan of the device.
