Coronavirus Updates

You should update your iPhone and iPad to iOS 14.5.1 right away

The update includes security fixes for bugs that are actively being exploited. Apple on Monday released iOS 14.5.1 and iPadOS 14.5.1 for its iPhone and iPad lineup. The update comes just a week after  iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5   were officially released, but there's a good reason for the back-to-back updates: It includes a fix for two security issues that, according to Apple, are actively being used.  According to a  security post  about Monday's update, there are two WebKit bugs that "Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited." The issue impacts the iPhone 6S or newer, all iPad Pro models, the iPad Air 2 or newer, the iPad 5th generation or newer, the iPad Mini 4 or later, and the latest iPod touch.  To update your device, open  Settings > General > Software Update  and follow the prompts. As always, it's a good idea to backup your device before installing the update. Apple also released a similar update for its Mac

Epic-backed expert says Apple’s app store profit is as high as 78 percent

An expert witness for Epic Games testified that Apple’s App Store had operating margins above 70 percent in fiscal years 2018 and 2019,  new court documents show.  Ned Barnes testified that information from Apple’s Corporate Financial Planning and Analysis group show the App Store had a 77.8 percent operating margin in 2019, and 74.9 percent in 2018. The figures are close to Barnes’ calculations of the App Store’s profits, he testified, and “also refute criticisms of my report proffered by certain Apple expert witnesses that it is not possible to calculate reliably or usefully the operating margins of the App Store.” Barnes also testified that Apple has been tracking its App Store profits for several years. Apple has hotly contested that interpretation of the data.  As  Bloomberg  notes , Apple’s chief compliance officer said at a congressional hearing last month that “we don’t have a separate profit and loss statement for the App Store,” and that Cook has made similar statements abo

How to stop apps tracking you with Apple’s App Tracking Transparency feature

Apple ’s controversial App Tracking Transparency feature is finally rolling out as part of the latest  iOS  14.5 software update. The built-in privacy feature is a big deal for iOS – after all, it will give iPhone and iPad owners more transparency and control over apps, further boosting their privacy. First unveiled at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2020, the new feature is a major step for user privacy, giving Cupertino a significant edge over companies like  Facebook  and  Google  that track user activity to produce targeted advertisements. Since 2012, Apple is using the IDFA (“Identifier of Advertising”) which is a replacement for the Unique Device Identifier,  to track different websites and apps. Unlike the UDID, the IDFA gives users more control over their privacy. Before the rollout of  iOS 14.5 ,  iPhone users were able to limit ad tracking but this new feature gives control over apps that want to track for advertising. Facebook, the social media gia

Apple rolls out ‘controversial’ feature with iOS 14.5

Apple rolls out ‘controversial’ feature with iOS 14.5 Apple first released iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5 in February through its developer and public beta programs. Since then, the operating system has seen several updates as Apple worked on refining features and removing bugs.  On Monday,  Apple officially released  the update for all iPhone and iPad users. You can download iOS 14.5 or iPadOS 14.5 right now by going to  Settings > General > Software Update . It's a good idea to back up your Apple device before installing the update just in case there's an issue you have a current backup to restore your phone or tablet with.  The most notable and controversial feature included in the update is App Tracking Transparency (ATT). As of April 26, any new app submissions to the App Store will need to comply with ATT, which requires app developers to get permission from a user in order to track their activity across other apps and websites when using an iPhone or iPad.  You
