UK-India collaboration at heart of vaccine miracle: UK PM Boris Johnson

The Enhanced Trade Partnership will unlock new opportunities for Indian businesses in the United Kingdom and British businesses in India, UK PM Boris Johnson tells TOI in an exclusive email interview. Excerpts: Q: Given the Covid surge in India and the strong relationship between UK and India in healthcare, how do you think we can expand this relationship in terms of vaccine production? Coronavirus is the greatest global challenge of our lifetimes. If we’re going to defeat this pandemic, countries will have to work together with a spirit of openness. India and the UK have demonstrated this commitment to cooperation throughout the last year. You have kept your borders open so that vital medicine and PPE gets to those who need it in the UK and of course we cannot forget the immense contribution Indian people make to our National Health Service. I’m proud that the UK has been able to help India during the acute Covid emergency you are currently facing. On Sunday I anno...

Free doughnut to popcorn For Vaccine:US

“This is the way we put this pandemic in the rearview mirror and move on with our lives," said Dr. Steven Stack, Kentucky’s public health commissioner.   Krispy Kreme began offering a free doughnut a day to anyone showing proof of having been vaccinated. In Cleveland, a movie theater is supplying free popcorn through the end of this month. Free beer and doughnuts. Savings bonds. A chance to win an all-terrain vehicle. Places around the U.S. are offering incentives to try to energize the nation’s slowing vaccination drive and get Americans to roll up their sleeves. These relatively small, mostly corporate, promotion efforts have been accompanied by more serious and far-reaching attempts by officials in cities such as Chicago, which is sending specially equipped buses into neighborhoods to deliver vaccines. Detroit is offering $50 to people  who gi...

Joe Biden had spoken at length with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday and conveyed solidarity with India in its fight against the viral disease. "We are sending immediately a whole series of help that he needs, including providing for those Remdesivir and other drugs that are able to deal with this," Joe Biden told reporters at a White House news conference on Tuesday. "We are sending the actual mechanical parts that are needed for the machinery they have to build a vaccine, and that is being done as well," he said. The president said he had discussed with Prime Minister Modi on when the US would be able to send actual vaccines to India. "The problem is right now, we have to make sure we have other vaccines like Novavax and others co...

internet giants like Facebook, Twitter that finally shut Trump

In the days after Donald Trump whipped up a mob to overrun the U.S. Capitol in a desperate attempt to stop the certication of his defeat, many conservatives have voiced their outrage over the true victims of the failed putsch. “I’ve lost 50k-plus followers this week,” an indignant Sarah Huckabee Sanders wrote on Twitter on Saturday, after the platform banned Trump and purged accounts that promoted the QAnon conspiracy theory.  Complaining of “radical left” censorship, Sanders, Trump’s former press secretary, wrote, “This is not China, this is United States of America, and we are a free country.” In fact, Twitter and Facebook’s ejection of Trump is pretty much the opposite of what happens in China; it would be inconceivable for the Chinese social media giant Weibo to block President Xi Jinping. Trump’s social media exile represents, in some ways, a libertarian dream of a wholly privatized public sphere, in which corporations, not government, get to dene the bounds of permissib...

Donald Trump takes this big decision ahead of Joe Biden's inauguration in Washington

At least five people died as a result of the chaos, including a US Capitol Police officer. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is warning that armed protests are being planned in all 50 US state capitals, including the US Capitol building, in the final days leading up to President-elect Biden's inauguration, Sputnik reported.  "The President's action authorises the Department of Homelan...

TWITTER'S FULL STATEMENT ON WHY IT PERMANENTLY SUSPENDED DONALD TRUMP'S ACCOUNT

Twitter on Friday banned United States President Donald Trump's account , citing “the risk of further incitement of violence" following the violence at the Capitol on Wednesday.  In a detailed explanation posted on its blog , the company said Trump's recent tweets amounted to glorification of violence when read in the context of the Capitol violence. Twitter also cited plans circulating online for future armed protests around the inauguration of US President-elect Joe Biden. After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them — specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter — we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence. In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action. Our public interest framework exists to enable the ...

Congress confirms Biden’s electoral victory

WASHINGTON: Congress confirmed President-elect Joe Biden’s victory early Thursday, overwhelmingly repudiating a drive by President Donald Trump to overturn his defeat after it culminated in a mob of loyalists storming and occupying the Capitol in a shocking display of violence that shook the core of American democracy.      There was no parallel in modern American history, as insurgents acting with the president’s encouragement vandalized Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office, smashing windows, loot looting art and briefly taking control of the Senate chamber, where they took turns posing for photographs with fists up on the dais where Vice President Mike Pence had just been presiding.  Outside the building, they erected a gallows, punctured the tires of a police SUV and left a note on its windshield saying, “PELOSI IS SATAN.”      The attack by rebels carrying pro-Trump paraphernalia stopped the electoral counting for several ho...

Pelosi says House will move to impeach Trump if he doesn’t resign ‘immediately’

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California said Friday that the House would move to impeach President Donald Trump over his role in inciting a  violent mob attack on the Capitol  if he did not resign “immediately,” appealing to Republicans to join the push to force him from office.   In a letter to members of the House, the speaker invoked the resignation of Richard Nixon amid the Watergate scandal, when Republicans prevailed upon the president to resign and avoid the ignominy of an impeachment, calling Trump’s actions a “horrific assault on our democracy.”   “Today, following the president’s dangerous and seditious acts, Republicans in Congress need to follow that example and call on Trump to depart his office — immediately,” she wrote. “If the president does not leave office imminently and willingly, the Congress will proceed with our action.”

Trump Permanently Banned From Twitter-Trump Said "To Silence me"

San Francisco: US President Donald Trump accused Twitter of conspiring with his political enemies "to silence me," after the social media platform permanently suspended his account.      "Twitter has gone further and further in banning free speech, and tonight, Twitter employees have coordinated with the Democrats and the Radical Left in removing my account from their platform, to silence me -- and YOU, the 75,000,000 great patriots who voted for me," he said in a series of tweets from the official @POTUS account. The post was then swiftly deleted.      Twitter said Friday it has permanently suspended President Donald Trump's account, citing the risk of further violence following the assault on the US Capitol by his supporters.      "After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account," Twitter said in a blog post explaining its decision, "we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of v...

TRUMP ACKNOWLEDGES BIDEN VICTORY-US

WASHINGTON: President Donald  Trump  conceded on Thursday that  Joe Biden  will be the next US president, a day after his supporters  stormed the US Capitol as  Congress  was certifying Biden's victory in a stunning assault on American democracy.       Trump , who as recently as Thursday morning had continued to claim falsely that the election had been stolen from him, said his focus would now turn to ensuring a smooth transition to a  Biden  administration in a video released on Thursday evening.                                                                                                                        -TRUMP
