China’s emissions now exceed all developed countries combined

It’s a powerhouse for renewable energy, but it still heavily relies on coal plants. It has committed to being carbon neutral  by 2060  but presented no clear roadmap on how this will happen. It has the world’s largest population, with a growing climate footprint as purchasing power increases. Evidently, it’s not easy for China to take action on climate its emissions significantly — and unfortunately… it’s about to get worse. China emitted more greenhouse gas than the entire developed world combined in 2019, the first time this has happened since national emissions have been measured,  a new report  showed. Even if everything goes according to plan, China won’t reach peak emissions by 2030, which means its output will continue to grow.   According to the Rhodium Group, global emissions reached 52 gigatons of CO2-equivalent in 2019, increasing 11.4% over the past decade. And China’s share is growing fast. While its emissions were less than a quarter of the o...

House Republicans move to oust Liz Cheney from party leadership

A spokeswoman for House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, the second-ranking Republican in the House, said in a statement on Wednesday that he supported Representative Elise Stefanik, a 36-year-old New York Republican, for replacing Cheney as House Republican Conference chair, reports Xinhua news agency.    "House Republicans need to be solely focused on taking back the House in 2022 and fighting against Speaker Pelosi and President Biden's radical socialist agenda," said Lauren Fine, the spokeswoman.    "Elise Stefanik is strongly committed to doing that, which is why Whip Scalise has pledged to support her for conference chair."    Representative Kevin McCarthy of California, the minority leader and a close ally of Stefanik's, was reportedly pushing Republican lawmakers to privately support Stefanik.    Stefanik, who not only defended the former President during his first impeachment proceedings in 2019, but also supported a legal action to...

Whose 'Big Lie'? Trump's proclamation a new GOP litmus test

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump and his supporters are intensifying efforts to shame — and potentially remove — members of their party who are seen as disloyal to the former president and his false claims that last year's election was stolen from him. On Capitol Hill, Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the No. 3 Republican in the House, risks losing her leadership post amid her increasingly public dispute with Trump. In Utah, Sen. Mitt Romney, a rare Trump foe in the GOP, faced the indignity over the weekend of reminding a booing crowd that he was once their presidential standard-bearer. And in Texas, the only openly anti-Trump Republican in a crowded special election for a congressional seat finished a lowly 9th. Trump left office nearly four months ago with his reputation badly damaged after a mob of his supporters waged a deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol to prevent the certification of election results. But the recent developments suggest a revival of his political fortunes in which ...

Fringe Benefits: Do celeb endorsements of COVID vaccines help?

“I just want to say to all of you cowards out there: Don’t be such a chicken squat,” Parton (inset), 75, said in a video after receiving her vaccine in Tennessee. “Get out there and get your shot.” This is hardly the first time public figures have thrown their popularity behind an effort to change the behavior of ordinary people. In medicine, celebrity endorsements tend to echo or reinforce messages that health authorities are trying to publicise, whether it’s getting a vaccine, or other medical treatment. In 18th-century Russia, Catherine the Great was inoculated against smallpox as part of her campaign to promote the nationwide rollout of the procedure. Almost 200 years later, backstage at “The Ed Sullivan Show,” Elvis Presley received the polio vaccine in an effort to help reach at-risk teenagers.    But do the star-studded endorsements really work? Not necessarily. Epidemiologists say there are plenty of caveats and potential pitfalls — and little scientific evidence t...

Scaling Up The Biopharmaceutical Supply Chain In Response To COVID-19

As the pandemic advances into its second year, the biopharmaceutical industry is moving fast to overcome the logistical complexities of rolling out a large-scale, global vaccination program. Innovative new methodologies are being deployed to increase visibility across the supply chain and make it more agile. Collaboration at an unprecedented level among all parties involved in the development and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines is critical to success. Scaling up the supply chain to meet demand requires the development of solutions capable of rationalizing the procurement of vaccine ingredients, managing manufacturing constraints, and streamlining distribution. Life science organizations must address balancing supply and demand in a highly volatile market made more complex from multiple government agency requests. Using simulations and modeling tools to recognize demand patterns, they quickly learn where vaccines were most needed. The next challenge is getting vaccines produced. ...

She cited "extraordinarily high Covid-19 caseloads and multiple variants circulating in India" and said the policy The policy will take effect May 4. The new restrictions are on the advice of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and are imposed "in light of extraordinarily high COVID-19 case loads and multiple variants circulating in India," the official said. Australia bans arrivals from India

Travellers now have to undergo a mandatory two-week hotel quarantine at their own expense, a system that has largely helped Australia to keep its Covid-19 numbers relatively low, with just over 29,800 cases and 910 deaths. Australian residents and citizens who have been in India within 14 days of the date they plan to return home will be banned from entering Australia as of Monday and those who disobey will face fines and jail, government officials said. The emergency determination, made late on Friday, is part of strict measures to stop travellers to Australia from the world's second most populous nation as it contends with a surge in Covid-19 cases and deaths.                                               The restrictions come into effect from May 3 and breaching the ban risks civil penalties and up to five years imprisonment, Health Minister Gre...

U.S. Closes In On 100 Million Americans Fully Vaccinated

Disneyland reopened on Friday and New York’s mayor predicted the big city will be up and running again at full strength by July 1, as the number of Americans fully vaccinated against COVID-19 closed in on 100 million. Visitors cheered and screamed with delight as the Southern California theme park swung open its gates for the first time in 13 months in a powerful symbol of the U.S. rebound, even though the self-proclaimed Happiest Place on Earth is allowing only in-state guests for now and operating at just 25% capacity. The reopening and similar steps elsewhere around the country reflect increasing optimism as COVID-19 deaths tumble and the ranks of the vaccinated grow — a stark contrast to the worsening disaster in India and Brazil and the scant availability of vaccines in many poor parts of the world. While the overall number of lives lost to COVID-19 in the U.S. has eclipsed 575,000, deaths have plummeted to an average of about 670 per day from a peak of around 3,400 in mid-J...
