Sharks Use Earth's Magnetic Field Like GPS to Navigate Oceans

How do sharks navigate through the deep, dark world under the seas? Scientists now say they have the very first evidence which shows that sharks use Earth's magnetic fields like a GPS to move across seas and oceans. There are no “street lights” or physical barriers to guide them during their long-distance voyages and migrations. Yet they appear to identify and reach their destinations thousands of kilometres away with precision. Saying that navigating through a three-dimensional ocean is one of the most impressive feats of evolution, the researchers said there is a possibility that sharks use their electrosensory organs to read Earth's magnetic field like a map or atlas. Published in the latest issue of Current Biology journal, the research tested the previously unverified theory that sharks used magnetic fields to navigate. For this, they focussed on sharks that were smaller. The researchers also tried to identify the shark species known to return to specific locations every

Sony PlayStation 5 Supply Constraints May Spill Into 2022, Company's CFO Hints

Sony PlayStation 5 is still one of the hardest thing to get your hands on in the tech world. Now, it is being reported that it won’t get any easier in the coming times, according to the company’s CFO Hiroki Totoki. According to a report in Bloomberg, Totoki said that it is difficult for Sony to keep up with the demand for the PS5, and that the situation is likely to continue into 2022. “I don’t think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand,"  Totoki was quoted by Bloomberg as saying. Totoki also said that the company has sold more than 100 million units of the PlayStation 4 and considering the company’s market share, it can’t imagine the demand dropping easily or soon. Sony is aiming to

These Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 deals just beat the all time lowest price

Samsung Galaxy Watch deals have plummeted in price in the US this week, with some record low discounts beating out the already excellent savings we've been seeing over the last couple of days. That means you can pick up the latest Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 for as little as $229.99 (was $399.99) . Buy samsung watch 3 Here in amazon...... Considering before the last week we'd only seen these Samsung Galaxy Watch deals teetering around the $300 mark (and even last week's offers only dropped them down to $249.99), that's some spectacular value. Not only that, but we're seeing these record low prices across the size range and with LTE compatibility as well. However, if you're shopping in the UK you can still get involved in the action as well. While Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 deals aren't quite matching their all time lowest prices yet, you can still grab the entry level model for as little as £299 thanks to a £100 discount . US FTC States Repair Restrictions Imposed by Manufacturers Impact Consumer Rights, Small Businesses

US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has submitted a report examining consumer protection and antitrust issues relating to repair restrictions that manufacturers impose, especially in the mobile phone and car industry. These repair restrictions include using adhesives that make it difficult to replace parts, making diagnostic software unavailable, and limiting the availability of spare parts. These repair restrictions hurt small businesses as well as impact consumer rights under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. It also states the actions that the FTC can take in some cases of anti-repair practices. The US FTC report submitted to Congress mentions that it has become increasingly hard to repair and maintain many consumer products as they often require specialised tools, access to proprietary diagnostic software, or have parts that are difficult to obtain. This not only makes it near impossible for consumers to repair their phones or other devices, but also limits a small repair shop

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 could cost less than we thought

Most cutting edge technology starts off expensive and then gets cheaper over time, and that's likely to be the case for foldable phones as well – and a new leak suggests that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 might not cost quite as much as its predecessor. The 5G-ready Galaxy Z Flip that launched in June 2020 originally retailed for $1,449 / £1,399 / AU$2,599, but a new leak from tipster @FrontTron on Twitter suggests that the next clamshell-style foldable from Samsung is going to sell for $999-$1,199. A straight currency conversion puts that at £715-£860 / AU$1,275-AU$1,530 but that's not how Samsung will set the prices. Perhaps a better way to think about the rumored cost of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is that it's going to cost a third less than the model that came before it. That's a hefty drop, and considering we haven't heard much from this particular source before, it's wise to treat this as very much unconfirmed for the time being – even though we'd be very h

Windows 10X: Microsoft reportedly shelves its ambitious lightweight operating system

Windows 10X is apparently dead. Microsoft ’s long-awaited Windows 10X operating system, its Chrome OS competitor, has been cancelled. According to Petri, Microsoft won’t ship the operating system anytime soon. The Windows 10X, which many thought would be a fresh take on Windows 10, was supposed to come first on single-screen devices designed for education and business use.      While Microsoft may have stopped the development of Windows 10X, the company is still expected to bring some elements of the operating system to Windows 10 later this year. It is said that the Redmond, Washington-based software powerhouse is reportedly working on the updated version of Windows 10 with a refreshed UX. Codenamed “Sun Valley”, Windows 10 will see a brand new user interface and app containers. The cancellation of Windows 10, if the report is true, is a big blow to Microsoft. When the company announced Windows 10X at its high-profile event in New York in 2019, it said the operating system would

WhatsApp defers May 15 deadline on privacy policy

Instant messaging platform WhatsApp on Friday said it had for now done away with the May 15 deadline for users to accept its privacy policy and that it would “follow up” with people who had not yet accepted the new terms of service. “No accounts will be deleted on May 15 because of this update and no one in India will lose functionality of WhatsApp either. We will follow up with reminders to people over the next several weeks,” a spokesperson for the company said in a statement. The Facebook-owned company also said that though most WhatsApp users had accepted the terms of the updated privacy policy, some have not had the chance to do so. “We’ve spent the last few months working to clear up confusion and misinformation. As a reminder this update does not impact the privacy of personal messages for anyone,” the spokesperson said. Earlier this year in January, WhatsApp had, through an in-app notification, told its users that it had updated the privacy policy and that if they did n

ust 12% of global iOS users and 4% of US ones have allowed app tracking since the iOS 14.5 rollout

Nobody was ever in doubt that Apple's new anti-app tracking (ATT) feature, rolled-out with iOS 14.5 would have a major impact on the way targeted advertisement works and consequently, any company with a business model built around it. Like Facebook and its subsidiaries, like Instagram - some of the most severely-affected parties and naturally among the most vocal against ATT .                         Having a hunch that a certain change is significant, though, is not the same as getting some actual data on just how significant it is. The Verizon Media-owned Flurry Analytics has its mobile analytics services integrated in over 1 million mobile applications and collects aggregate insights on over 2 billion mobile devices each month. According to Flurry's data, just around 12% of global users have allowed app tracking for apps that requested it on their devices post the iOS 14.5 update. And that number is just 4% in the US. Just to clarify, in case you are not familiar with how A

The Tech Weekender: PUBG Mobile coming to India in a new avatar, Google following Apple's lead, Discord coming to the PlayStation, and more

WhatsApp recently scrapped its May 7 deadline for users to accept its controversial privacy policy update. The Facebook-owned messaging platform announced the policy update back in January 2021, which was first supposed to come into effect on February 8. However, severe backlash from users, who were concerned about privacy, forced the company to postpone its plans. The last date for accepting the policy update was pushed to May 15 after which WhatsApp said it would delete accounts of those who didn’t accept the new terms.\  As the wait for PUBG Mobile's return in India continues, developer’s Krafton, recently announced that the game will be rebranded as Battlegrounds Mobile India. Ahead of the launch, the game’s new website has gone live. The developers have also quietly changed the logo on the company’s official YouTube channel. Battlegrounds Mobile India pre-registrations will begin soon in India. The website now confirms that the Battlegrounds Mobile India release date is imm

Zoom has special access to your iPad's camera

Wondering why you can multitask during a Zoom video call on your iPad when you can't with other apps? Zoom isn't being sneaky — it's just taking advantage of a good relationship. As 9to5Mac reports , developer Jeremy Provost has learned that Zoom has special permission from Apple to use the iPad's camera during Split View multitasking. The company told Provost it received a private "entitlement" letting it use a multitasking-friendly programming interface that's normally off-limits outside of FaceTime. Entitlements aren't new, but they're typically public and just require that developers walk through a process to enable them. You can ask for CarPlay integration for a navigation app, for example. The iPad camera entitlement, however, is undocumented and only available to those Apple considers "worthy," according to Provost. We've asked Apple for comment. It's not surprising that Zoom would get this access. The video chat app has

Tesla refutes Elon Musk's timeline on 'full self-driving'

What Tesla CEO Elon Musk says publicly about the company's progress on a fully autonomous driving system doesn't match up with "engineering reality," according to a memo that summarizes a meeting between California regulators and employees at the automaker. The memo, which  transparency site Plainsite  obtained via a Freedom of Information Act request and subsequently released, shows that Musk has inflated the capabilities of the Autopilot advanced driver assistance system in Tesla vehicles, as well the company's ability to deliver fully autonomous features by the end of the year. Tesla vehicles come standard with a driver assistance system branded as Autopilot. For an additional $10,000, owners can buy "full self-driving," or FSD — a feature that Musk promises will one day deliver full autonomous driving capabilities. FSD, which has steadily increased in price and capability, has been available as an option for years. However, Tesla vehicles are not

The return of Google TV is pushing TiVo away from Android

A year ago the  TiVo Stream 4K dongle  launched for $50 (it's now selling for  $40 ), applying the company's software to provide a front end to streaming services while running on Android. The idea is that with their knowledge of content and easy access, it could pull out the items viewers really want from the various silos, and make cord cutting more accessible.  In late 2019 then-CEO Dave Shull said they were betting the future of the company on this plan, but just a few months after the Stream 4K launched a problem popped up: Google released its new Chromecast with a "Google TV" interface that offers features like recommendations and individual profiles that are very similar to what TiVo is trying to offer.  So what's next?   ZatzNotFunny  points out an earnings call this week from TiVo owner Xperi that highlighted the problem and their updated direction as a result. The transcripts  on Seeking Alpha  show what Xperi CEO Jon Kirchner said in response to a que
