Tamil Nadu Covid news live: Total lockdown from May 10 to May 24

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a total lockdown in the state from May 10 to May 24 to curb the spread of Covid-19. Fresh Covid-19 cases reported in a day in Tamil Nadu crossed the 25,000-mark on Friday as the state reported 26,465 new cases, pushing active infections to 1.35 lakh. The 197 deaths reported on Friday took the cumulative toll to 15,171. Cases tally for the state is 13.23 lakh. The average number of deaths due to Covid-19 in Chennai has increased rapidly in the past two months. Official data from Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) shows that on an average, three people died of Covid-19 every day in the city in March — the month’s tally was 90 deaths. In comparison, the average number of daily Covid-19 deaths in the city rose to 16.7 in April, when 501 died totally. The city has, however, registered an average 46.2 deaths daily in May so far. Totally, 277 people have officially died due to Covid-19 in the city from May 1-6. Stay with TOI for all the latest updates:
