Microsoft has
released an update for Winget- Windows 10 package manager, that offers
users an alternative way to uninstall unwanted software.
Winget was introduced to offer users an easy way to install apps from a
library of widely used developer tools curated by the company. The
service features can be leveraged by the users with the help of
console commands after it is installed.
Microsoft has released the Winget 3.0 version for early-access members. Many
new features have been added such as the option to uninstall any Windows
10 app from the command line directly.
Package managers are widely used by Linux users and these are designed to
efficiently automate the software installation and configuration process. As
stated in a post by Microsoft, “most package managers are designed for
discovering and installing developer tools”.
Windows 10 power users can also leverage package managers, to simplify specific
workflows.
In order to access the new Winget features, such as the ability to uninstall
apps, users are required to make certain changes to the configuration file. To
access this file users need to go to “winget settings” and then set the
“experimental Features” field to “true”.
When experimental features are enabled, the “winget list” command can be
leveraged to open a list of all apps installed on the device. To uninstall
these apps, users can simply enter “winget uninstall [app name]”.
All the functionalities of Winget are supported by the majority of the command
line tools, which includes Windows Terminal, Command Prompt, etc.
All that said, many users still find uninstalling software through
the Control Panel more convenient. However, for users who wish to
uninstall many apps at once, Winget offers is the best way to do so.
