Tim Cook says iPhone 12 is the most popular iPhone model, but Pro sales also ‘very strong’

Apple CEO Tim Cook has revealed the most popular iPhone model and the answer is not surprising at all. During Wednesday’s Apple earnings call for fiscal Q2 2021, the company CEO said that among all iPhone models released in 2020, the iPhone 12 is the most popular. He said that it has been most successful among the current iPhone family, while underlining the fact that even the Pro models continue to do well.

Cook said that both the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max have also been recording strong sales, although not in first place. Interestingly, he did not mention anything about the iPhone 12 mini sales which has been struggling. Various reports suggest that Apple is even planning to stop production for the iPhone 12 mini.

“iPhone 12 is the most popular, but we did see very strong sales of the Pro portion of the family as well. So the revenue that you’re seeing is a function of unit growth and revenue-per-unit growth,” Cook said, during the call.

This was the first time when Apple had launched four iPhone models at the same time iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. While the first was the most affordable, it came in very compact form factor which has a very limited market in the current times. Both the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are excellent smartphones but are priced on higher side. In India, both these can cost above Rs 1 lakh and up to Rs 1.5 lakh which takes them out of reach for most.

What makes iPhone 12 a hit?

The iPhone 12 offers the best of both worlds. The pricing makes the iPhone 12 more accessible than either of the Pro models even though it comes with the same processor. The display finds a better balance between screen area and body size than the iPhone 12 Mini. It comes with excellent cameras, a clean iOS experience, compact form factor and good display.

To recall, the iPhone 12 features a 6.1-inch OLED display and is powered by company’s own A14 Bionic chipset. It runs on iOS 14, has a dual camera setup at the back housing a 12-megapixel wide and 12-megapixel ultrawide lens. For selfies, the notch houses a 12-megapixel TrueDepth camera sensor. The phone claims to offer 17 hours of battery life on a single charge. The mini iPhone offers up to 15 hours of juice on a single charge.

The iPhone 12 price in India starts at Rs 79,900 for the 64GB option. The 128GB model is priced at Rs 84,900, while the 256GB option is priced at Rs 94,900.

The success of iPhone 12 also explains Apple's decision to add a new colour option to the phone. The phone was initially launched in five colour options including Black, Blue, White, Green, and Red colour options. However, during its Spring Loaded event last week, Apple added a new Purple colour variant to the iPhone 12.

Supply shortage to affect Apple

Meanwhile, Apple has reported $89.6 billion in revenue and profit of $23.6 billion for fiscal Q2 2021. This compares to the revenue of $58.3 billion and profit of $11.25 billion the company posted for the same quarter last year. During the call,

CEO Tim Cook explained that Apple did not see supply constraints in Q2, but that will change for Q3. This can lead to a loss of up to $4 billion in revenue in the third quarter.

“We did not have a material supply shortage in Q2. You wind up collapsing all of your buffers and offsets. That happens all the way through the supply chain. That enables you to go a bit higher than what we were expecting to sell when we went into the quarter,” Cook said.A
