Chennai police thwart child marriage in Royapuram

CHENNAI: An all-women police team stopped the marriage of a 16-yearold girl at a marriage hall in Royapuram on Monday. Police handed over the girl to child helpline volunteers. Based on a tip-off, the team visited the hall and found that the girl was getting

dressed for the wedding. Police asked her parents to produce documents to prove her age. During questioning, the girl's parents confessed that their daughter was a minor. The police warned and let them off. "We told them that they would face legal action if they tried to marry off the girl before she is 18," said a police officer. A team of child helpline volunteers advised the girl's parents to continue her studies and inform them while they arranged her marriage when she is an adult.
