Instagram’s head apologizes for bug that deleted activists’ stories

Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri  has tweeted an apology  about a bug that deleted users’ story posts on Thursday. The timing was unfortunate for activists trying to raise awareness about missing Indigenous women, with organizations Red Dress and National Day of Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG, abbreviated by some as MMIWG2S to include two-spirit people)  questioning whether their posts  had somehow been erased deliberately. According to Instagram, however, the bug affected stories, archives, and highlights of Instagram users across the globe. Mosseri and  Instagram’s statement  about the deletions say this isn’t the case and that the stories were not removed because of anything content-related. He specifically addressed the Indigenous people’s concerns. “This day is incredibly important to raise awareness of this critical issue and support our Indigenous community on Instagram,”  Mosseri tweeted . “We apologize to all those who felt like they could

Google Stadia has figured out a way to ditch the fancy gamepad for TV play

Today, there’s only one official way to play Google’s Stadia game streaming service on your 4K TV — the last-gen Chromecast Ultra, connected to the company’s proprietary Stadia Controller over Wi-Fi. That’s because Google hasn’t yet brought Stadia  to the new-and-improved $50 Chromecast , and its predecessor didn’t support Bluetooth, meaning the only way to pair a controller was to loop through Google’s servers in the cloud. But Google now has a workaround,   9to5Google  reports . There’s a new “bridge mode” hidden in the latest version of the Stadia app on Android that should let you send controller signals from your phone — letting you play Stadia with your phone’s touchscreen, or even connect another gamepad to your phone. You’ll be able to use your phone to change your TV’s volume, too, according to text snippets buried in the APK. The original Stadia Controller has been something of a thorn in the company’s side ever since Stadia launched on November 19th, 2019, so it wouldn’t

Google asks Android app developers to show user privacy labels on Play Store

In late 2020, Apple had made it mandatory for developers registered with Apple App Store to show a privacy label, that discloses what and how much user data is being tracked and stored. And, last week, Apple launched the App Tracking Transparency feature with the iOS 14.5 (& iPadOS 14.5) update to give full control to users to completely block the tracking and storing information. Now, Google has taken a leaf out of Apple's user privacy guidelines. The search engine giant has announced that it will ask Android app developers to come clean on user data tracking and collection. Some of the key aspects Android app developers will be disclosing on Play store include: 1) Whether the app has a proper security practice, like data encryption 2) Whether the app follows Google's Families policy 3 ) Why the app needs the data (user's personal info) to function or if users have a choice in sharing it 4) Whether the app’s safety section is verified by an independent third-party 5) T

The 6 recent Android 12 leaks we're most excited to see

Android 12 is still months away from its official rollout (likely in September), but that hasn't stopped a torrent of new leaked features in the lead up to Google IO 2021 , where we'll see a more official version. XDA Developers acquired an unreleased, experimental version of Android 12 in April. After diving deep into the code, the site has found dozens of new twists that you won't find in the first , second or third developer previews. And other leaked features have arisen since then. Frankly, some of these leaked features are not something that anyone outside of Android power users would notice. But there are a few new tricks that would absolutely benefit Android phone owners if they make it to the official release or public beta. Here are six leaked Android 12 features you should watch out for later in 2021. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 Might Support The S Pen And That Spells More Trouble For The Note Lineup

As per Dutch website LetsGoDigital , Samsung has filed an application with the EU property Office that hints at S pen compatibility. The trademark is for a specific “Z Flip” model - which was known to be in the pipeline for Samsung - but the synopsis mentions both “electronic pens” and “capacitive styluses for touch screen devices ”. Now Samsung might have just added a regular description for the upcoming phone, and had no intention of ever adding S Pen support to the Z Flip 3. But the folks over at LetsGoDigital checked the trademark filing for last year’s Z Flip model and located no mention of a stylus or electronic pen. That’s a major indication that something is afoot, and for Galaxy Note series, none of it is good news. With the Galaxy S range increasing in size and claiming more and more Note-like features, the S Pen was just about all that remained. WhatsApp to become increasingly less useful if you don't accept its new terms

WhatsApp has clarified how it will be treating the accounts of users who won't be accepting its updated terms and policy. The information was posted on the company's official website For those who choose not to accept the company's updated terms, the app will continue to show a notification asking to accept. After a period of several weeks, the users will see a persistent reminder. Once users see a persistent reminder, the WhatsApp app will switch to a limited functionality mode. In this mode, users won't be able to access their chat list. If they receive a chat, they will be able to open it through their notifications and also respond to them. Any incoming audio and video calls can also be received. A few weeks later, the user will stop receiving all calls and messages. WhatsApp doesn't put an exact date on any of these events, giving a nebulous period for each state that will seemingly vary based on users. Also, it's not clear what relevance the previously men

Windows 10’s Sun Valley update revamps icons used since Windows 95

Windows 10 icons that have remained pretty much the same since Windows 95, prepare for disappointment. The operating system’s Sun Valley update is refreshing these graphics with a more contemporary look. Windows Latest  spotted the revamp in the latest preview builds of Sun Valley, which is set to land in October or November. In addition to adding new icons for File Explorer and other apps, Microsoft is updating the icons inside the Shell32.DLL. Some of the icons have remained pretty much unchanged since Windows 95 arrived over 25 years ago. There are images of floppy disk and CD drives, computer chips, hibernation mode, networking, and more. The new icons do look quite modern, with extra color and a less antiquated style. The change should give Windows a more unified appearance, rather than containing elements from different eras of the OS. Sun Valley has been in the works since last year. It will introduce a comprehensive visual rejuvenation of Windows, including a new interf

Apple is giving a laser company that builds some of its AR tech $410 million

Apple  has announced  that it’s awarding Pennsylvania-based optical technology company II-IV with $410 million from its Advanced Manufacturing Fund. Apple CEO  Tim Cook tweeted  that the company’s tech helps power Apple’s FaceID, Memoji, and Portrait Mode. The company also manufactures lasers that are used in the LIDAR scanner found in the iPhone 12 Pro and iPad Pro, technology that Apple touts as being key to augmented reality experiences. Finisar, which was  later acquired by II-VI  (pronounced “two-six”) received $390 million from Apple’s fund back in 2017. While this latest investment likely shows that Apple intends to keep FaceID (which is powered by II-IV’s vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers) around for a while, it could also be another sign pointing to Apple’s future with AR and VR. Tim Cook has publicly said that he believes AR is “critically important” to Apple’s future, and II-IV manufactures devices that help computers see the world in 3D. The money could help devel

Twitter is testing a new Tip Jar feature for sending money to your favorite accounts

Twitter has started  rolling out a new Tip Jar feature  on its Android and iOS apps, which ( as rumored ) will allow users to send money directly to their favorite accounts. To use the tip jar, simply tap on the freshly added dollar bill icon next to someone’s username when viewing their profile on one of Twitter’s mobile apps. Users will be able to toggle the tip jar feature, too (for those individuals or organizations that don’t want people just sending them cash out of the blue). Android users will also be able to send money in Twitter’s Clubhouse-like Spaces. Tip Jar supports a variety of payment options and links: Bandcamp, Cash App, Patreon, Paypal, and Venmo. Twitter is using those services’ external payment processors for transactions; it doesn’t take a cut. All English language Twitter users can send tips starting today, but only a select group (including “creators, journalists, experts, and nonprofits”) can turn on the feature to accept money for now. show your love, lea

IBM announces first 2nm chip, offers performance boost

IBM  launched the world’s first 2 nanometers (2nm) semiconductor today. The new semiconductors will help the tech industry towards better, more powerful processors which can now utilise the smaller semiconductor size to get more units in a single processor and get up to 45 per cent higher performance while using 75 per cent lower energy than a 7nm chip. The 2nm design demonstrates the advanced scaling of semiconductors using IBM’s nanosheet technology. It will allow chips to fit 50 billion transistors on a chip “the size of a fingernail”. The new 2nm semiconductor “is the product of IBM’s approach of taking on hard tech challenges and a demonstration of how breakthroughs can result from sustained investments and a collaborative R&D ecosystem approach,” Darío Gil, SVP and Director of IBM Research said.   What benefits chips with 2nm semiconductors bring? The new 2nm semiconductors will let chips consume much lesser battery in devices like cell phones. IBM suggests that use

WhatsApp May Start Offering Sticker Suggestions to Android, iOS Users

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will suggest stickers based on the words you type, according to a report. The new feature is said to be currently under development and it could be made available to both Android and iOS users. Some references suggesting how the sticker suggestion feature could work have surfaced online. It is also said to be initially limited to WhatsApp's native sticker collections. Companies including Apple and Google already offer contextual emoji and sticker suggestions to their users. The new feature will analyse the first word you type in the chat bar to suggest relevant stickers, WhatsApp beta tracker WABetaInfo reports . The source has also provided a screenshot and a video that suggests the default sticker icon in the textbox would flash to notify users when a sticker suggestion is available. Users would just need to tap the flashed sticker icon to view the suggestions, as shown in the video. Also Read: Future Pixel phones may get unlimited Googl

Google brings Gboard to Wear OS, says more exciting features are coming

A lot of people will agree that Google’s handling of Wear OS has been very disappointing, to say the least. The operating system which was designed to power smartwatches lags behind when compared to Apple’s own watchOS and Samsung’s Tizen . Things are about to change for the better according to Google and the first step is the announcement of Gboard for Wear OS. Gboard for Wear OS is said to be the first new app for the operating system in years. The announcement brings a much easier and faster way for users to type. According to Google, Gboard brings multi-language support, scrollable word suggestions, voice input, gesture typing, and a full QWERTY keyboard. Google seems to have more interesting things in store for Wear OS as it has said that it can’t wait to share the other things it has planned for the operating system this year. Systemic Lapses: A missed opportunity for technology majors in India

As the country is hit with the world’s worst coronavirus crisis, Indians are using Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter and shared online documents to crowdsource medical help and hold their elected leaders accountable for their mistakes.   But the technology companies are mostly leaving Indians to fend for themselves. That’s the message from Mishi Choudhary, a lawyer who works to defend digital rights in India and the United States. Choudhary told me that she is furious about what she believes are failures of both Indian officials and the mostly American internet companies that are dominant in the country.    Tech companies, she said, should be doing far more to fact-check coronavirus information that is spreading like wildfire on their sites and stand up to Indian officials who are trying to silence or intimidate people for speaking out online. A consistent theme in this newsletter has been that a handful of technology companies have power on par with those of governments. Choudhary wonde
